In Memoriam: Professor Janet Theiss (1964-2025)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Janet Theiss , an eminent historian of women, gender, law, and society in late imperial China, and a long-standing member of the International Society for Chinese Law and History (ISCLH). A professor of history at the University of Utah, Professor Theiss’s work, including Disgraceful Matters: The Politics of Chastity in Eighteenth-Century China , reshaped our understanding of gender, morality, legal culture, and social order
