ISCLH 2026 Aaron Chen Memorial Foundation Book Prize in Chinese Legal History 中国法律与历史国际学会2026年（双年）陈景义纪念基金会著作奖揭晓

The International Society for Chinese Law and History (ISCLH) is delighted to announce the results of its Biennial Book Prize competition for books bearing a 2024 or 2025 copyright date.

The prize committee selected Jenny Huangfu Day’s Transborder Fugitives, Extradition, and Political Crimes in Modern China as the winner.

The committee particularly admired how Huangfu Day places familiar figures and episodes from modern Chinese history within a fresh legal and transnational framework. Combining impressive archival research with an engaging narrative, the book illuminates the development of extradition and political crime in China and their relationship to international law and politics.

The Society is also pleased to recognize two books with honorable mentions:

Max Wong’s Legal Pluralism in Qing China: Transplantation and Transformation offers an ambitious study of how “customary law” was constructed and deployed as a legal category in late Qing and early Republican courts. The committee recognized the book as an important contribution to our understanding of legal pluralism and legal transformation in modern China.

Matthew H. Sommer’s The Fox Spirit, the Stone Maiden, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China draws creatively on legal cases and other sources to offer a compelling new approach to gender, identity, and embodiment in late imperial China. The committee recognized the book for its originality and its significant contribution to Chinese legal and social history.

ISCLH warmly congratulates Jenny Huangfu Day, Max Wong, and Matthew H. Sommer on these outstanding achievements. The Society also extends its sincere thanks to the members of the prize committee for their thoughtful and careful consideration of this year’s nominated books.

中国法律与历史国际学会（ISCLH）在此正式宣布2026年（双年）陈景义纪念基金会著作奖评审结果：

评审委员会推选皇甫峥峥（Jenny Huangfu Day）教授的《跨境逃犯、引渡与近代中国的政治犯罪》（Transborder Fugitives, Extradition, and Political Crimes in Modern China）作为本次获奖作品。

评审委员会尤其赞赏皇甫峥峥教授将近代中国历史上一些人们所熟知的人物与事件，置于一个全新的法律与跨国视野之中。该书以扎实而令人印象深刻的档案研究为基础，并结合引人入胜的叙事，揭示了中国引渡制度与政治犯罪观念的发展，以及二者与国际法和国际政治之间的关系。

此外，评审委员会还推选以下两部著作评作为荣誉提名作品（honorable mentions）：

王慧麟（Max Wong）教授的《清代中国的法律多元主义：移植与转化》（Legal Pluralism in Qing China: Transplantation and Transformation），对晚清及民国初期司法实践中“习惯法”如何被建构并作为一种法律范畴被加以运用进行了视野宏大的研究。评审委员会认为，该书对于理解近代中国的法律多元主义与法律转型作出了重要贡献。

苏成捷（Matthew H. Sommer）教授的《狐仙、石女及晚期帝制中国跨性别故事诸相》（The Fox Spirit, the Stone Maiden, and Other Transgender Histories from Late Imperial China），创造性地运用司法案件及其他史料，为研究晚期帝制中国的性别、身份与身体提供了一种富有说服力的新路径。评审委员会认为，该书具有突出的原创性，并对中国法律史与社会史研究作出了重要贡献。
