the call for submissions for its Biennial Book Prize, established in 2020.
The prize is awarded to an outstanding monograph published in English within the
preceding two years that makes a significant contribution to the understanding of
Chinese law and history.
Eligibility
To be eligible, monographs must:
• Be based on original research
• Focus on the historical dimensions of Chinese law (periodization is open,
ancient, medieval, and modern are all welcome)
• Offer substantial legal analysis within a historical framework, or present
historically informed legal comparisons between China and other societies
• Be published in English within the last two years (from 1 January 2024 to
31 December 2025)
Both nominations and self-nominations are welcome. Submissions may be made by
authors, publishers, or other scholars.
Submission Process
Applicants should submit one copy of the publication to the Prize Committee at
chineselegalhistorybookprize@gmail.com by 1 June 2026. Please note that hard copies
may be requested at a later stage for shortlisted books.
The ISCLH Book Prize seeks to recognize and promote outstanding scholarship that
advances the interdisciplinary study of Chinese law and history, and we warmly
encourage eligible submissions.
Note: ISCLH is planning to establish a Book Prize recognizing monographs published in
Chinese. The call for submissions will be announced in 2027.
